Cataract Awareness Month: did you know EasyScan has unique capabilities to image through cataract?

Cataract is one of the leading causes of vision loss in the elderly. It is caused by a clouding of the lens of the eye. The treatment is relatively easy and standard: Replacement of the eye lens by a plastic Intra Ocular Lens (IOL).

The clouding of the lens does not only impact the vision of the patient, but also hinders the imaging of the retina in cataract patients with a normal fundus camera or indirect ophthalmoscope. Therefore it is difficult to assess the health of the Retina prior to the cataract surgery. The unique optical design of the EasyScan allows clear imaging even through moderate cataract, see images below. This example clearly shows that the patient not only had significant cataract but also had a clear macula pucker, which could potentially impact their post-op visual acuity.

The easy pre-operative screening for retinal conditions allows a more careful assessment of the appropriate treatment options (IOL selections) and manage patients’ expectations of the visual outcome of the surgery.

The EasyScan is uniquely suitable for imaging patients even under the most challenging conditions (small pupils and cataract).
